Overview of Online Training Topics

This program offers free, bilingual (English/Spanish) online training courses designed for adults with developmental disabilities (DD) and/or parents/caregivers/guardians of individuals with DD in Texas. The training courses will be presented via narrated videos with subtitles and downloadable, printable handouts, making the learning process clear, flexible, and easy to understand. The goal is to help our participants learn more information about finding and using local, state, and federal resources, understanding their rights, choosing and evaluating different types of healthcare providers, and advocating for their healthcare needs. 

The courses will be offered in 10 major topics present in detail below.

1. Finding, Choosing, and Evaluating Mental Health Professionals in Texas

Through this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of mental health and mental health treatments for individuals with DD​​.

  • Learn about the qualifications and responsibilities of mental health professionals and how to find and select care.

  • ​Learn how to effectively evaluate mental health professionals.

  • ​Learn how to develop knowledge and skills for improved care and overcome barriers when accessing care.

2. Finding, Choosing, and Evaluating General Pediatricians in Texas

Through this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the role of general pediatrics and its importance to individuals with DD.

  • Learn about the qualifications and responsibilities of general pediatrics and how to find and select care.

  • ​Develop the skills to evaluate general pediatricians.

  • Learn how to develop knowledge and skills and overcome barriers when evaluating general pediatricians.

3. Finding, Choosing, and Evaluating Primary Care Physicians for Adults with DD in Texas

Through this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the role of primary care and its importance toward individuals with DD​​.

  • Learn about the qualifications and responsibilities of primary care physicians (PCPs) and how to find and select their services.

  • ​Understand the importance of evaluating PCPs and learn how to evaluate PCPs.

  • ​Develop knowledge and skills for improved care and overcome common barriers when accessing PCP services. 

4. Finding, Choosing, and Evaluating Dentists in Texas

Through this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the meaning of oral health and its importance to individuals with DD.

  • Learn about the qualifications and responsibilities of dentists and how to find and select dentists.

  • ​Understand the importance of evaluating dentists and learn how to effectively evaluate dentists.

  • Develop knowledge and skills to help overcome barriers in access to dental care.​

5. Finding, Choosing, and Evaluating Obstetricians/Gynecologists (OB/GYNs) in Texas

Through this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the meaning of obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) and the importance of OB/GYN services for females with DD.

  • Learn about the qualifications and responsibilities of OB/GYNs and how to find and select OB/GYNs.

  • ​Learn how to effectively evaluate OB/BYNs and understand the importance evaluations.

  • Develop knowledge and skills to help overcome barriers in access to obstetric and gynecological care.​

6. Finding, Choosing, and Evaluating Eye Doctors in Texas

Through this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the meaning of eye health and treatments and its importance to people with DD.

  • Learn about the qualifications and responsibilities of eye doctors.

  • ​Understand the importance of evaluating eye doctors.

  • Learn how to effectively evaluate an eye doctor and develop knowledge and skills to help overcome barriers when evaluating eye doctors.

7. Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) for Children with Developmental Disabilities in Texas

Through this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the meaning of ECI services.

  • Understand the importance of ECI services to children with DD.

  • Learn about the providers of ECI services and how to find ECI services.

  • Learn how to evaluate ECI services and develop knowledge and skills to help overcome barriers when evaluating ECI services.

8. Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)/Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Meetings for Individuals
with DD in Texas

Through this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the meaning of IEP and ARD committee and its importance to individuals with DD.

  • Learn about who provides and creates an IEP.

  • ​Understand the importance of evaluating an IEP.

  • Develop knowledge and skills to help overcome barriers in evaluating an IEP.​

9. Health Insurance and Texas Medicaid Waiver Programs for Individuals with DD in Texas

Through this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose of health insurance and its importance to people with DD.

  • Learn about different types of health insurance and how to apply for them.

  • Learn about the barriers when accessing health insurance and the Texas Medicaid program for people with DD.​

  • Develop knowledge and skills to help overcome barriers when accessing health insurance and the Texas Medicaid Waiver program for people with DD.

10. Patients Rights, Advocacy, and Communication in the State of Texas

Through this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the meaning of rights and responsibilities, and explain who has rights.

  • Learn how to identify patients rights in healthcare settings and understand why patients with DD must know their rights.

  • Understand the importance of patient advocacy for patients with DD.​

  • Develop important advocacy skills to help overcome barriers and communicate in a healthcare setting.
